01 - Golden Smog - Please Tell My Brother
当打算作这期民谣radio后,我便自然而然的想到用Golden Smog这首歌作为开首曲。不是因为这首歌,或者这个乐团在民谣界有多高的地位,而是这首歌的亲和力。通过歌词,我们可以想象出这样一幅画面:一个来自伊利诺斯州的游子,用电话向家乡的亲人诉说思念。这个世界上没有任何语言会比亲人间的话语更朴实,却包容着更为丰富的情感。这种只能意会不能言传的情感,几句普通的问候却能清楚的表达出来。
当唱到第四段时,我终于知道电话的另一头是Jeff Tweedy的母亲。哪次我打电话回家80%的时间不是在和妈妈说话?恕我迟钝。

02 - Woody Guthrie - the great dust storm (dust storm disaster)
Woody Guthrie的最伟大之处或许并不在“这件乐器能杀死法西斯”,而在于他永远只为民众而歌唱。the great dust storm讲述了一场可怕的沙尘暴,注意歌唱者将自己摆在什么位置来描述这场灾难的。歌词字里行间中Woody Guthrie流露出对沙尘暴破坏力的恐惧,以及对它给人们带来苦难的担心。再让我们想象一下新闻媒体对自然灾害的“格式化”报道,“死伤××人,经济损失高达×××××××元”,就能明白何为真正的人民艺术家,以及人民艺术家的伟大之处了。

03 - Sandy Deeny-Blackwaterside
Blackwaterside是一首著名的英国/爱尔兰民歌,流传着多个版本,至今人们还为它是爱尔兰民歌还是英国民歌而争论不休。英国人认为歌词中出现"the Irish lad"证明了这首歌不是爱尔兰人所作,且英国境内也有一条叫做Blackwater的河。爱尔兰人则说这首歌从爱尔兰传入英国是不争的事实,并且爱尔兰也有地方叫做Blackwater。还好,内容敏感的歌词并没有引发什么民族情绪,人们只是平静的讨论它的起源,毕竟,优美的民歌意义和价值远远超过了歌曲的内容本身。

04 - Ola Belle Reed - high on a mountain
象美国很多传统山区民歌(mountain songs,主要以Appalachian folk,阿巴拉契亚山脉民谣为主)艺人一样,Ola Belle Reed仅限在folkways(1987年厂牌创始人Moses Asch去世后被史密森学会接管,更名为Smithsonian Folkways)这样不以主要盈利为目的,致力于推广民谣音乐的厂牌中出版唱片。他们的音乐是没有多少商业价值的,但是在一个真正的民谣乐迷眼中,他们的音乐就是无价之宝。Ola Belle Reed出生在北卡罗来那州蓝脊山脉中新河流域的山村中,自幼喜爱自己家乡的山区民歌,8岁开始学习班卓琴演奏,并和哥哥组成民谣二重唱走上音乐之路。与大多数从美国中南部山区出来的民歌艺人所不同的是,ola belle reed不仅仅传唱流传下来的老民歌,她还自己写歌,并且,她的作品丝毫不亚于任何一首传唱了百年的老民歌。high on a mountain便是她最为出色,流传最广的代表作。凡是稍微正宗些的民谣节,这首歌必然是必唱/放曲目。最近,当代钟情传统民歌的民谣艺人频频作出象ola belle reed致敬的举动,去年Demolition String Band便出版一张全部翻唱Ola Belle Reed作品的专辑--Where the Wild, Wild Flowers Grow: The Songs of Ola Belle Reed。

05 - Roger Mcguinn - dink's song (with pete seeger & josh white jr)

06 - 王娟- 水滴
可能这么说有些证据不足,王娟现在弥补了国内民谣乐的空白,做出这种内省的,忧伤的,敏感的但同时异常美的女性民谣王娟是第一人。她的音乐与轰轰烈烈的摇滚景观不搭调,她不讨摇滚铁托们的喜欢,但他们的倒彩也丝毫影响不着台上的她。国内拥有自己“耳朵”的乐迷群体在一天天扩大,好音乐是不会缺乏知音的。不用去管抗议和草根,把自己唱出来,你就是王娟。
07 - Roscoe Holcomb - across the rocky mountain
与Ola Belle Reed一样,Roscoe Holcomb也是一位典型的山区民歌音乐家。他一生中大部分时间都生活在肯塔基州的小镇中,远离现代文明,远离商业社会,使得更少人能够接触到纯正的山区民歌,但反过来看,也正是因为这些山区民歌音乐家对传统生活方式的恪守,让现在的我们听到了纯正的山区民歌。Roscoe Holcomb被当代评论界誉为美国山区民歌最忠实的演绎者,如果一首来自山间的民歌不通过这幅没有经过任何美化,包装的嗓子唱出,那就相当于cosplay,装化的再象也终究是一场模仿秀。

08- 杨一 - 没有什么可以激动的了
当让人激动的事情象电线杆子上的小广告般铺天盖地时,我们也不知道该为哪件事情而激动了。于是,黑压压的我们都变无聊了。住在城市中的同志们,在物质文明丰富的同时,精神文明同时也在高速的物质化。30有5的杨一还在为我们找不到什么可以激动的而激动,如果这首歌还能让你激动,证明你还有救。
09-Jean Redpath-Rambleaway
如果说Roscoe Holcomb是Appalachian folk最忠实的演绎者,那么Jean Redpath则是Traditional Scottish Folk的“移动档案馆”。她早已超出了普通民谣音乐家的范畴。出生在一个有着充分艺术和文化底蕴的家庭中(父亲是扬琴演奏家,母亲则精通苏格兰民间历史),从小母亲就把苏格兰的民间故事用唱歌的方式对她进行着民歌和民俗的双重熏陶。长大后她先是研究中世纪文化,但最终还是女承母业,将苏格兰民间文化研究作为自己终生的事业。
61年Jean Redpath来到美国,碰巧赶上了民谣浪潮,她也就顺理成章的把Traditional Scottish Folk介绍给了美国民众。来自大洋彼岸的民歌引起了当地媒体和民谣圈的关注,唱片合同以及巡演机会随之而来。至今她已经出版多达40张唱片(大部分专辑为自己独立发行),演出的足迹遍布各大洲,为苏格兰民歌和民俗文化作出了实质性贡献。
古老的民歌都会有很多版本,Rambleaway(也叫做young Rambleaway)也不例外。Rambleaway旋律有两种版本。一种是较欢快的,第二种版本较为悲伤。Jean Redpath所翻唱的是第二种版本。歌词的版本就更为五花八门了,我找到三种歌词版本,但和Jean Redpath所唱仍有有一些不同之处。但歌词的意思都大同小异。

10-Ella Jenkins-Jambo
40年如一日的为孩子们而歌唱,这个世界上可能属Ella Jenkins老妈妈最爱孩子了。她几乎成为了童谣的代名词。独创的“领唱—齐唱”的演唱方式,在教孩子们唱歌的同时,还教各种各样的知识,加上歌曲节奏欢快,生动有趣,连家长们都成为了她的忠实听众。2004的葛莱枚终身成就奖的评委们估计有不少都是听着她的歌长大的。
在这首歌中Ella Jenkins在教孩子们说坦桑尼亚和肯尼亚的当地语言(斯瓦海里语),Jambo是当地的问候语,相当于英语的Hello,Sana是everybody的意思,watoto的意思是“孩子们”。

11 - Alasdair Roberts - carousing
Alasdair Roberts来自苏格兰的格拉斯哥,来自这个地方的摇滚乐队大都有着出众旋律,比如Mogwai,比如Teenage Fanclub,再比如Travis,The Jesus and Mary Chain,还有更老的Donovan和Al Stewart。Alasdair Roberts的音乐也有着出众的旋律,但与前面的几位不同,资质最浅的他所作的音乐却最古老。他的所爱是传统的苏格兰民谣,所作的是现代的传统苏格兰民谣。Appendix Out仍然让他觉得音乐不够纯,不够净,他便单飞出版了一张全部翻唱传统苏格兰民歌的The Crook of My Arm,第二张专辑Farewell Sorrow则全部为原创。这首歌便选自这张专辑。但并不是原创就意味音乐的传统味道会变掉,象这样的把本民族音乐融入自己血脉之中的人,他的原创只能被称为Traditional Scottish Folk revival。

12 - Damien Jurado - smith 1972
在当代知名的民谣唱作人中,Damien Jurado算比较有传统情节的,不过这种传统情节只体现在他的ep中——他的大碟一般都偏摇滚,思路都很现代,但他的ep却是另外一种风格,Appalachian folk的那种韵味相当明显,smith 1972来自他最近的一张ep,整张ep都是仿效老民谣唱片的音色,第一次听到它实在某一天的深夜,当时的感觉真是应了ep的名字——Just In Time For Something。

13 - Vashti Bunyan-17 Pink Sugar Elephants
Vashti Bunyan1969年录制了她的唯一作品Just Another Diamond Day,但直到2000年粒宝石才闪耀光芒。这里面有一个有趣的故事:Vashti Bunyan年青时代是一位不折不扣的垮掉派,专辑录完便迫不及待的“上路”去了。不幸的是1970年这张专辑并没有真正的发行,Vashti Bunyan也把整件事情抛在了脑后,直到1997年她第一次用电脑上网,用搜索引擎搜索自己的名字,她惊讶的发现自己受到这么多的关注,Just Another Diamond Day奇货可居,受到了很多资深民谣乐迷的追捧。后来她才知道这张专辑并没有真正发行,于是便萌生了重新发行它的念头。但重新发行一张30年前的专辑谈何容易,它牵涉到版权,商业利润种种问题,这些问题把她拖入一系列她从前一无所知的繁琐的商业程序之中,搞得她精疲力竭。甚至有几次她都打算放弃了,还准备印制些音质不高但省时省力的bootleg了事。幸好其中她得到了Just Another Diamond Day制作人Joe Boyd的无私帮助,三年的努力最终换来了成果,2000年Just Another Diamond Day重新发行,宝石终于闪耀光芒。
这首歌并没有收录在Just Another Diamond Day,2001年收录在Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine(着重介绍迷幻和英国民谣乐)第30期的附送cd中。

14 - Sarah White-You're Not Easy You're Hard
Sarah White是我喜欢的一位女民谣歌手,第一次听到这首歌我还对她一无所知,但是这首纯正的民谣给我留下了深刻的印象。后来我才知道来自蓝脊山脉(阿巴拉契亚群山中的一条子山脉)的她喜欢周游世界,她早已和唱片公司解约,去过自由自在的生活。她的音乐就像她的个性一般,很自我,也很低调,有点忧伤,但却很有灵气。

这首歌在专辑中是最后一首,在这借来一用。Will Oldham已经不必多介绍,我特别喜欢那段他和他的兄弟Ned的合唱,Ned这么漂亮的嗓子躲在Will那副枯嗓后面,搭配虽然古怪但每次听都让我感觉这其中蕴涵着民谣最吸引着我的东西,但我始终说不明白它到底是什么。
